Carol Rothwell, an occupational psychologist, claims to have
produced a mathematical formula for happiness. She says happiness equals P + 5E + 3H.
In the equation, P stands for Personal Characteristics such
as outlook on life, adaptability and resilience; E for Existence Needs such as health,
financial stability and friendships; and H represents Higher Order Needs such
as self-esteem, expectations and ambitions.
Rothwell devised the formula from the results of a survey of
more than 1,000 people. The survey also revealed gender differences. For women,
spending time with family is the most important factor while men are more
cheered by holidays, sex and sporting victories.
